REFLECTION
Experience
My typography learning journey was very enjoyable. Although there are struggles everywhere, I sometimes feel exhausted, sometimes dissatisfied with my work and dissatisfied with the layout. But I am very happy to have the opportunity to learn typography after I have been exposed to graphic design in 2021. After appreciating the work of many graphic designers, I also saw the skills of my classmates in the course and learned a lot. Being able to finally create my own font is one of the highlights of my learning typography. The project is interesting, but time-consuming due to its extensive process. Typography enhanced my observation skills and taught me discipline when designing fonts. In addition, my experience in learning typography has made me respect fonts and pay more attention to its effect on design.
Observations
Through the given tasks, I learned to observe all the small details of the letters, the changes in characteristics, and the illusion differences in the font design. I used to think that some fonts are symmetrical, but after research and type decomposition, I found that they are actually asymmetrical. In addition, I also find that every time I read a newspaper or a novel, I pay attention to typography. I will find myself observing it and admiring the font design. Sometimes I will stare at the product at home and think "that font is not acceptable" or "why is it not aligned".
Findings
Throughout the semester, I found that typography was more than I actually saw. They are not just words or letters arranged in interesting compositions or beautiful fonts. When I first started learning typography, I found that there were a lot of rules to follow. Although I expected the rules, I did not imagine that there would be so many, and all the different terms are so detailed, especially the anatomy of the letters. Since I am a person who prefers art and its freedom, I must devote more patience and tenacity to learning typography and design. There are many times when I want to break the rules and don’t want to care whether it looks unconventional or illegible. Although art and typography are different, I find that observation skills, especially attention to detail, are also important in typography.
