LECTURE

Week 4

HARMONY

  • Harmony involves the selection of elements that share a
    common trait.
  • Harmony becomes monotony without variety*.
  • Harmony is the sense that all of the elements of your design fit
together. They may fit the same theme, aesthetic style or mood.

UNITY

  • Unity refers to the repetition of particular elements throughout your design — whether they’re colors, shapes or materials — to pull the look together.
  • Unity occurs when these elements are composed in such a way that they are balanced and give a sense of oneness, creating a theme.
  • Although unity and harmony may sound similar, they each play distinct roles in the way we experience design.

SCALE AND PROPORTION

  • Scale and proportion are both design elements that have to do with size.
  • Scale is the size of one object in relation to the other objects in a design or artwork.
  • Proportion refers to the size of the parts of an object in relationship to other parts of the same object.
  • Throughout the centuries, designers have used scale and proportion to depict or distract from the ideal.

Week 5

SYMBOL

  • A sign, shape, or object that is used to represent something else
  • In design, symbols can provide or convey information, equivalent to one or more sentences of text, or even a whole story
PICTORIAL SYMBOLS

• Image-related and simplified pictures

ABSTRACT SYMBOLS
  • Abstract symbols can look like the objects that they represent but have less details.

ARBITRARY SYMBOLS
  • Arbitrary symbols have no resemblance at all to the objects or the ideas they represent.
  • The symbol is invented with the meaning constructed. Many are based on geometric shapes and colours.
  • We have to learn arbitrary symbols.

WORD AND IMAGE

  • Imagery is a vital part of design, be it print or digital. Users and viewers are able to relate to a concept or a brand if the right images are used in a work of design. It is therefore important to use suitable and relevant images when designing.
  • Choosing the right words to pair with the imagery is of high importance as it would deepen the meaning of the design. Suitable typeface and strategic positioning of the type will result in visual hierarchy and balance in a work of design.
  • Typography is the design and arrangement of text to convey a message or concept.

EXERCISE 3

Choose TWO principles from Harmony / Unity / Symbol / Word and Image. Produce 1 design for each chosen principle.

UNITY

MOODBOARD

FIGURE 1.1 MOODBOARD FOR UNITY

This idea is come from my toys magic block and also an idea from a game name "GENSHIN IMPACT" a boss.

WORKING PROGRESS

FIGURE 1.3 LAYOUT #1

Feedback from Dr Charles

The idea is good, the cube arrangement is nice too but the background need put in white or another background color, don't make the background black. Then the other suggestion is to make it feel like floating.

FIGURE 1.5 WITHOUT ANY BACKGROUND

When I did it, my head suddenly jumped out of the idea that there are small squares around the square, and then I want to put the whole object in the universe.

Feedback from Dr Charles

It’s a bit ordinary, and then you have to get a good angle when taking pictures.

FIGURE 2.4 WORKING PROGRESS

As Dr Charles said, there is a special way to show photos, when there is one in my head that is for me to make and fix the photos in it, just like a photo frame. When I used the S-shape to design, when I made it, I thought it was normal, and then when I was thinking about it, I saw the animal channel on the TV series. At this time, I thought of using animals to make the design. I used the back of a snake to make this design.

REFLECTION

When I was doing exercise 3, I found that I was much better than before because it took a lot of time to think about design. This time I also spent some time designing, but this time I improved a bit. When I was thinking about my ideas, I suddenly remembered a lot of pictures I had seen in anime movies before, so the idea of design came up again. When I did this, I found that I was not very good. When I was using AI and PS, I did this homework online. After seeing others using AI and PS, I finally learned a lot of skills, namely AI and PS, as well as creativity
