Week 1 Typographic Systems
All design is based on a structural system. There are eight major variations according to Elam which are :
- Axial
- Radial
- Dilatational
- Random
- Grid
- Modular
- Transitional
- Bilateral
Typographic systems have a set of rules that are unique and provide a sense of purpose that focuses and directs the
decision making. There are 8 major variations of typographic systems:
1. Axial system
All elements are organised to the left or right of a single axis.
2. Radial System
All elements are extended from a point of focus.
3. Dilatational System
All elements expand from a central point in a circular fashion.
|
|
Fig 1.4 Examples of Dilatational System |
4. Random System
Elements appear to have no specific pattern or relationship.
|
|
|
5. Grid System
A system of vertical and horizontal divisions.
|
|
Fig 1.6 Examples of Grid System |
6. Transitional System
An informal system of layered banding.
|
|
|
7. Modular System
A series of non-objective elements that are constructed as a standardised unit.
|
|
Fig 1.8 Examples of Modular System |
8. Bilateral System
All text is arranged symmetrically on a single axis.

TASK 1 Exercises: Typographic Systems & Type & Play
Exercises 1: Typographic Systems
TASK 1
For exercise 1, we need to do 8 square posters according to the 8 typographic system. Below are the notes that I took in class.
- Hierarchy of placing the information, which one should the reader read first
- placement of the information, how the reader will see the whole picture and read.
- Introduction of 1 colors, do not introduce the color before the layout is done.
- Typesetting, the right type size, leading, tracking. The point size should be between 8-12pt.
- Use any of the 3 titles in each system that needs to be relevant.
- must have a proper grid in useful guides, create guides and columns, and fit the guides to the margin
- the unit needs to be placed according to the margin and in the cell.

TASK 2: TYPE & PLAY / PART 1
We were asked to find a type from a picture that we choose, it can be nature, manmade things or the structure of the building. We need to create 5 letter form. Mr Vinod shows us our senior's blog and how the seniors create their own font by the steps. Mr Vinod suggested we follow the steps of our seniors, to trace the image first, to know better how letters can be seen on the original and remember to put baseline as guides.
At the beginning, I try to find reference photo to find font from. I search up of pictures that have the possibility. I tend to find picture that has the possibility of making an impactful font.

Here are 2 photos I found on Pinterest that I wanted to use as a reference. From 2 of them, I chose reference 1 to find fonts. I'm trying to track down reference 1 to see the possibilities.

At this stage, I had used the font called "Founder Handwriting-Beginner's Book" to improve my font weight and consistency, this font is downloaded from a Chinese Website

Text & Image
Week 5
We were asked to combine visuals with letters. Words must be woven into a symbiotic relationship with images.
I choose two photos for doing my Text & Image.
I did my first attempt. Below is my first attempt.

In the second attempt, I used the smart filter to assimilate the word into the original picture and then add some shadows to make it more like 3D.

FEEDBACK FROM MR. VINOD
Week 2
BILATERAL Mr Vinod the Bilateral the graphic element is unnecessary but the Bilateral wise is definitely correct so from the standpoint it's good. The spacing that I have between the various title can be consistent and a little bit more leading may be necessarry between the smaller deck RANDOM The "Graphic Design" need to work on that a bit more DINATIONAL That "J" no need to make it larger because is already capital and also the date that I have there also larger there again no need to do that, either make them all large, all the same point size bold or just make one of them bold otherwise GRID The word "The Design School" Mr Vinod say is no problem for that putting at the right bottom but at the right top is a bit empty, maybe something small on the top would be great if possible. Since the "The Design School" is a venue and "The Lecture" this could go to the top right TRANSITION Mr Vinod thinks my transition is a bit overcooked, the headline there's too much like things happening to it that unless that's unnecessary so maybe I can do away with the shadow, it's probably not necessary in an open public lecture. Mr Vinod says that my transition maybe can work one more time. RADIAL The "Russian..." is too much there's distortion so that's not so good. The non-objective element would be too dominant So need to redo it againWeek 3
Mr Vinod says my extraction is from this font, say I can actually take a look at the whole font that I see there and as I develop and refine my letter font if I want to introduce certain things that are not from the original font but from the basic thing basic design I can do so.
Remember to make reference to a typeface and head in that direction.
Week 4
Need to change a bit because not just focus on the creativity of different patterns.
Week 5
The "Summer" is okay for that but needs to add some black shadow to make it more real.
The second option "Summer" look no different from option one.
REFLECTION
Week 2
Experience
This week was the first week we saw Mr Vinod again in our first-semester typography class. I was still a little nervous in class, even though I had learned to typeset before. Anyway, I had a good experience in the class. While we have a lot of information to digest in class, as I browse through our future projects, I am excited and looking forward to seeing what it will turn out to be.
Observation
While doing the exercise that Mr Vinod asked us to complete, I noticed that while working on some typography systems it was difficult to align the grid lines I put with the fonts I put. I need to pay attention to the details of the job that make things aligned and easy to read.
Finding
I discovered how to type on the path tool in InDesign, I noticed that the design in InDesign is completely different from the design in Illustrator because I thought some tools would be the same, but it wasn't. But I still found some youtube videos for teaching
Week 3
Experience
To be honest, I have gradually become familiar with this subject. I also started to calm down more slowly than before, and I learned a lot of various designs in this practice.
Observation
In my observations, I have observed that when I do something, I learn to be very focused. I can use and retain information more effectively. I have also observed that my sketches are not perfect.
Finding
I find that my homework still needs improvement because I cannot effectively convey my thoughts or ideas. I have to work harder to record my progress, otherwise, I will lose points, but more importantly, my record and the narrative of my process will be hindered.
Week 4
Experience
Over the course of the week, we learned about the genre and gameplay of Task 2 part 2. We also did a 30-minute practice session in class. I didn't think my first attempt was that good and I felt pretty lost at first. After that, I made 2 more attempts. I think the result is good.
Observation
I've noticed that applying text to images also requires a lot of thought. It's hard to find pictures that express themselves well, I've saved a lot of pictures and tried and it still doesn't work. That's hard.
Finding
I found that there are many functions in photoshop that illustrator does not have, such as photo fusion fonts making fonts have a 3D vision
