INSTRUCTIONS

Ethnography and Netnography

Ethnography

First-hand experience
Participatory
Face to face
On-site
Observational

Netnography

  • limited to geography (combine ethnography and internet)
  • how to get responses from the internet

Research (netnography study) → Theory/Hypothesis → Outcome (an intercultural design)

Topic, research question, objective, rationale, instruments, gather data, ideation, final presentation

Advantages & Disadvantages of Netnography

Advantages
  • high scope of potentially valuable data
  • can overcome geographical limitations
  • data is naturally occurring
  • have the opportunity to discover unexpected findings
  • data may be available online that wouldn't be unearthed in a face-to-face context
  • contemporary

Disadvantages
  • largely empirical (quantifiable) and non-contextual
  • researchers may not be familiar with online platforms or choose irrelevant online platforms
  • data collection and analysis may be time-consuming or may have invalid data

What is Culture?

  • ethnicities
  • food
  • celebrations
  • festivals
  • artforms

Visible Culture

10%
  • Behaviours
  • Traditions
  • Customs
  • Touch, Taste, Smell, Sound...

PROJECT 1: PROPOSAL

I am in group 14, and my team members are my team leaders Britney Chow Pei Jun, teammate Chung Jia Xuan, Moey Jo Min, Sim Chze Huang and Wey Khai Yee.

FIRST MEETING(05 JAN 2022)

We shared the cultures that we are interested in and made our decision by voting.

Britney Chow Pei Jun - THAILAND KAYAN TRIBE
Chin Zhi Xian        - CHINESE PAPERCUTTING ART
Chung Jia Xuan       - EGYPT CULTURE (MURAL ART, MUMMY)
Moey Jo Min          - WAYANG KULIT, BATIK, INDIAN RICE ART
Sim Chze Huang       - CHINESE TRADITIONAL STYLE ART
Wey Khai Yee         - MUSIC CULTURE (e.g. BLUES)

The idea I suggested is CHINESE PAPERCUTTING ART which I am personally interested in.

China is the country that invented paper, and it has been making paper as early as the Western Han Dynasty. So far, the paper-cutting art, which is convenient for cutting and hollowing out of paper, meets the needs of folk customs, and then came into being among the people. However, the earliest real paper-cuts found so far are five group flower paper-cuts from the Northern Dynasty (386-581 AD) unearthed near the Flaming Mountains in Turpan, Xinjiang. These paper cuts are very similar to today's folk flower paper cuts, using the method of repeated folding and the handling of images that do not block each other.

In the end, we chose WAYANG KULIT because we thought it was interesting and could let more people know about the culture.

We put our idea inside this google slide for a present during the consultation.

FEEDBACK
Ms Jinchi suggested we focus on WAYANG KULIT in Indonesia or Malaysia. If we choose Indonesian WAYANG KULIT, we need to change our purpose because Indonesian WAYANG KULIT is still well preserved.

PROJECT 1 PRESENTATION VIDEO

After finishing recording the presentation video, my groupmate will send their part video record to me & I will be in charge combine the video together as our presentation video.

FEEDBACK:

REFLECTION

In the first week, I was still in a state of confusion. I was still a little uncomfortable at first, so I was always half a beat slower than my teammates, but now I'm starting to catch up with my teammates and start at the same time. I am very interested in cultural design because I have rarely been exposed to this cultural thing before, and I want to know more about them. However, things seem to be getting more difficult as time goes on. I would say the most challenging part is the initial idea, which is the main part of this project. Fortunately, our group was greatly helped by Ms Jin Chi, the supervisor. She provided us with a lot of useful feedback and suggestions. I hope our team will progress gradually and each of us will gain valuable knowledge or skills through this module.
