FINAL PROJECT - VISUAL ANALYSIS & FINAL E-BLOG

LECTURE

Today is week 10, Dr Jin Chi has recorded a video to explain the final project to us.

VISUAL & ANALYSIS

  • Is a method of understanding design that focuses on the visual elements & principles.
  • In its strictest definition- a description & explanation of visual structure for its own sake.
  • Yet the purpose of visual analysis can also recognise the choice that a designer made in creating the design, as well as better understand how the formal properties of design communicate ideas, content, or meaning
  • Visual analysis is a critical part of visual literacy, a skill that helps people read & critically interpret images, whether in a museum, on social media, in entertainment, advertising, or the news.
  • As citizens of the 21st century, we are constantly confronted with visual judgment skills & help people seek out answers instead of passively receiving information.

HOW DOES VISUAL ANALYSIS WORK?

Visual analysis can include three phases.
  • Phase 1: OBSERVATION
  • Phase 2: ANALYSIS
  • Phase 3: INTERPRETATION
PHASE 1 - OBSERVATION
  • OBSERVATION means closely looking at & identifying the visual elements of a design, trying to describe them carefully & accurately in your own words. Do not read beforehand about the design at all.
FIGURE 1.1 OBSERVATION

PHASE 2 - ANALYSIS
  • ANALYSIS requires you to think about your observations & try to make statements about the work based on the evidence of your observation.
  • Think about how the specific visual elements that you've identified combine together to create a whole & what effect that whole has on the viewer.
  • How your eye is led through the work and why? Apply the Design Principles knowledge you have learnt throughout these weeks.
FIGURE 1.2 ANALYSIS

PHASE 3 - INTERPRETATION
  • In this final phase, your observation, description, & analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work ( & in some cases the designer) & historical context that you find in trustworthy published sources.
  • What is the meaning of the design? What was the purpose for it to be created?

INSTRUCTION

FINAL PROJECT: VISUAL ANALYSIS & FINAL E-BLOG

These are TWO PARTS to this project

PART 1: VISUAL ANALYSIS

  • Select a design of your choice( poster/ billboard/ illustration/ etc)
  • Conduct a visual analysis of the design in about 500 words( refer to the steps shown above as guidelines).

PART 2: DESIGN

  • Produce a work of design, in A4 or A3 size, inspired/ influenced by the design you have analysed, or as a reaction to it.
  • Write a 150-200 word rationale for your design.

VISUAL RESEARCH

FIGURE 2.1

PHASE 1 - OBSERVATION

This design work was designed by a designer named Eiko Ojala(@o_eiko), and the name of this work is "An Olympic Catastrophe". He is famous for his digital paper-cut illustrations. I like his style very much because his works are designed in 3D, I feel that all his works are like living things, alive with life. Among his many works, I like his works best. This design work uses a vertical format with visual elements. The main colors I observed are grey, blue, charcoal green, purple and deep red. The overall composition is clean and tidy, and the composition used is the golden ratio. Generally speaking, this is a shape and design closely related to light and shadow. In the overall design, illustrations are rarely used in this design work, and a minimalist design technique is adopted. The article is placed in the lower-left corner, and the topic is placed in the upper right corner.

PHASE 2 - ANALYSIS

At first glance, this artwork attracted my attention because it is a model of the Olympic disaster described in New York, USA. The point is that the flame resembles a flame, and the hue is the most conspicuous. Many patterns are displayed in the flames, such as the Statue of Liberty, the Rio Olympics and the U.S. election. Harmony can also be seen in this design work, that is, the flames have similar shapes and different emotions. Not only that, there is rhythm in this flame. There are also proportions in the layout, creating layers, we see the largest size image, followed by smaller text. At the same time, I also saw this design work, and also saw that it also has movement, which is in the flame, as if he is squirming. This is very emphasized as the main theme of this work, and it forms a strong visual contrast.

PHASE 3 - INTERPRETATION

This work is to tell about the 2016 Rio Olympics and visualize current events such as this year's Rio Olympics, the U.S. election, breast cancer and the Zika virus. I found that this style of illustration reflects the ancient Chinese folk art style, which was mostly used in funeral and sacrificial ceremonies in the early days. Later, this art slowly evolved and began to be used for ceremonies. Later, this art began to expand slowly, and at the same time, it gradually integrated into the design industry all over the world, and slowly began to integrate into the 3D design.

In general, I think this is such a beautiful work that evokes a sense of inspiration, but I am in awe of the exquisiteness of its illustrations and composition.

Design Progression

FIGURE 3.1 ELEMENT

These four photos are the element that my artwork will use it.

I tried to design this artwork with my favourite marine animals. Therefore, I downloaded some ocean-related elements from Google, such as marine animals and corals. I started to collage in Photoshop. Therefore, the following are my two results.

RATIONALE
Before I started designing, my head always jumped out about nature, such as the sky, the ocean, and the forest. So this time I took things about the ocean as the theme, just like the design I chose. I like marine animals the most, so I try to download all the elements related to the ocean to start collage. It was not very smooth at the beginning until I found a paper-cut style design for the ocean in PINTEREST. I found that I already loved this style very much, so I started to find a lot of teaching about this design style and I liked it. The ocean comes together.

REFLECTION

I learned many different design principles, some of which I haven't even heard of before. I always lack confidence in my painting skills and creativity. Every time I see a classmate’s work, I feel very inferior. It's hard to come up with a new and different idea every week, and most of the time I feel very stressed. Every time we have a new project to complete, I always do my best to make it perfect, even though some of it still doesn't look good. But I feel very unconvinced, so I always improve my ability every time and learn more about design teaching and knowledge. Compared with before, my skills have improved a lot. Although online learning is boring, this module is always fun and interesting.
